Wednesday 12th October saw our first Careers employer encounter day of the academic year, Y11 had the opportunity to spend the day in workshops and industry talks with employers, learning about different progression opportunities available to them.
Y11 welcomed exciting talks by entrepreneur’s David Harkin and Carl Konadu who inspired students with their experiences and stories of their success journey.
The day involved workshops with Staffordshire University – learning about student life on campus, Stoke City FC giving a talk about their volunteering offers and match day placements and Higher Horizons. Higher Horizons + are a programme led by Keele University, which works to increase accessibility to Higher Education. They encourage young people from underrepresented groups in Higher Education to achieve their potential by enrolling on university courses. Much of the work is focused on young people who may be the first in their family to think about Higher Education, or who have low expectations of their routes through education. As part of the workshop the students designed their own ideal University campus – thinking about what rooms were needed for each subject course and other amenities that a campus could offer students, helping them to consider what they look for in future colleges/universities or workplaces and what their priorities are. Lastly, Y11 enjoyed a virtual workshop with Aztec Accountancy, where they heard from an employer about what it is like to work for an accountancy firm and what the general roles and responsibilities of their day entail.
Y11 enjoyed the day and took full part in the activities, some of the campus designs are pictured below.
