Year 7 Careers in Service Day

On 14 May, our Year 7 students took part in an inspiring Careers in Service Day, designed to introduce them to the wide range of careers and volunteering opportunities that help and support our local community. Throughout the day, students met professionals and volunteers from a variety of organisations, learning about the importance of service, solidarity, compassion and community spirit.

We were delighted to welcome volunteers from St John Ambulance, who delivered practical sessions on CPR and the recovery position. Students were highly engaged and enjoyed developing potentially life-saving skills while learning about careers and volunteering within emergency response and healthcare services.

Representatives from Stoke-on-Trent Foodbank, The Hive and Burslem Community Grocery spoke to students about food poverty, community support and the importance of helping those in need. As part of the event, Year 7 students generously donated over 100 items for local foodbank collections, a fantastic achievement that truly demonstrated our school values in action.

Students also heard from VAST about the many ways young people and adults can become involved in volunteering and community projects across the local area.

The team from ABLE shared valuable insight into supporting adults with learning disabilities and explained the rewarding careers available within care and support services. Students asked thoughtful questions and gained a greater understanding of inclusion, empathy and advocacy.

We were also pleased to welcome representatives from the Royal Air Force Air Cadets, who spoke to students about teamwork, leadership, discipline and the exciting opportunities available through the cadets, including community service and basic lifesaving skills.

We were also pleased to welcome Staffordshire Police representatives PCSO Nick and PC Ratcliffe. It was especially lovely to welcome PC Ratcliffe back to SMWCA as a former member of staff, now serving the local community in a new and important role. Students enjoyed hearing about careers in policing, community safety and public service.

The day was a wonderful opportunity for Year 7 students to explore careers that make a real difference to people’s lives while reflecting on the importance of kindness, service and supporting the wider community. We would like to thank all of our visitors for giving their time and inspiring our students.
