Remembering the Past. Inspiring the Future.
On 30 June, our Year 7 students were captivated by The Clay Remembers, a powerful live performance delivered by the talented Borderlines Theatre Outreach team from the New Vic Theatre as part of the Burslem Commemoration Project through our Careers and Touching Hearts curriculum.
Through outstanding acting and storytelling, students were transported back to the Potteries at the outbreak of the First and Second World Wars, following the lives of young people whose worlds were changed forever by conflict. The performance explored family, friendship, work, community and sacrifice, helping our students understand that history is not just found in textbooks, it is lived through the stories of ordinary people from our own local area.

The project also shines a light on the new memorial commemorating the workers from Doulton’s Nile Street pottery works who lost their lives during the wars, ensuring their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
Following the performance, students reflected thoughtfully during a discussion about remembrance, community and why it is so important to preserve the stories of those who came before us. They also have the opportunity to take part in a creative design competition inspired by the themes of the performance – see Miss Leese (Art) for more info.
As a Catholic school, we are reminded of the dignity of every human person and our call to be peacemakers. We remember with gratitude all those who gave their lives in the hope of a more peaceful future, praying that we continue to build communities rooted in justice, compassion and hope.
The morning also highlighted the many careers involved in bringing history to life, from professional actors, playwrights and directors to heritage specialists, community engagement teams, historians, designers and technicians, showing students how creativity can educate, inspire and preserve our shared heritage.
It was particularly poignant for our History teacher Mr Proctor, as unbeknown to us his Great Grandfather was one of the Doulton workers who went on to serve and was mentioned in the play – a touching moment.
A huge thank you to Borderlines Theatre Outreach, the New Vic Theatre, Port Vale FC Foundation, Stoke-on-Trent City Council and the Burslem War Graves Committee for providing such a meaningful experience for our students.
“Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.”
