On Thursday 6 March, 10 of our senior students from our school robotics teams (VNation and Sirius) attended a day workshop in the ABB Robotics Centre, Milton Keynes. The trip involved a tour of the facilities, demonstrating the many applications and products of the international robotics company; a chance to operate some robots of their own, with a lesson on the basics of programming by ‘jogging’ the robot with a joystick; and an afternoon CAD session about how virtual robots can be used for mapping and connecting to the real robots.
The trip was very informative and engaging, detailing a brief history of robotics interacting with our daily lives, as well as providing an insight into how ABB designs robots for all aspects of society – from building cars to helping lab technicians. The students learnt about both industrial and collaborative robots, receiving invaluable information about a career in robotics and just how diverse the field can be.
Overall, the workshop was interesting and a beneficial acquaintance with the world of technology. A huge thank you to ABB Robotics for inviting us and facilitating the day!
