Codementum International Coding Competition

Huge congratulations to Year 10 Computer Scientists Amanda, Anni, Izza, Enosh, Gabe, Kiron, Ryan and Hamza, who are international champions of the Codementum International Coding Competition!

A group of eight of our year 10 students are celebrating an exceptional win after coming first place in the high school category of the international Codementum competition.

The students competed with 130,000 other students across 144 countries to be the best in their age group.

Held remotely across the globe, the Codementum competition sees groups across three categories; Primary / Upper Elementary, Secondary / Middle School and High School, compete to achieve three main objectives. The first, to complete the challenge, second, to complete the challenge as accurately as possible achieving one, two or three stars and third, to complete it in the fastest time to win.

The eight Computer Science students who took part, Amanda Ngondo, Anni Tahir, Izza Fatima, Enosh Wickramaratne, Gabe Lymer, Kiron Bampoe, Ryan Namuto and Hamza Nasar, not only completed the challenge but ranked #1 globally for the fastest time to finish. The average time to complete the coding challenge in the group was approximately 20 minutes.

Championed by Teacher of Computer Science, Rebecca Fallows, the students undertook 20 challenges, each getting harder as they progressed through the competition.

Miss Fallows said: “I am exceptionally proud. The eight students have shown how incredibly capable they are. They went determined to prove that an ordinary state school in Stoke-on-Trent could be among the best in the world, and not only did they succeed, they won!”

Principal Dominic McKenna said: “This is an incredible accolade for the school. It helps to put St Margaret Ward and Tunstall on the map and represents our incredible student body exceptionally. Well done to Miss Fallows and all the students who competed for showcasing their incredible hard work, understanding and knowledge. We’re excited to see what the future holds for these computer science students.”
