Curriculum Driver: A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITIES

INTENT

In Modern Foreign Languages, we aim to develop inquisitive confident and ambitious language learners who are curious and interested in the wider world. The main aims for our pupils are fluid communication and a broad cultural awareness in our multilingual and multicultural world. They will gain a strong phonetic knowledge to enable them to converse confidently (and pronounce new vocabulary) and a reinforcement of many literacy skills from their first language. They will learn how to manipulate grammar to allow them to personalise information and retain core phrases that can be recycled in a large number of real-life situations. Through this knowledge and confidence they will become resilient and competent linguists who are open-minded and versatile communicators.

IMPLEMENTATION

At KS3, the French curriculum is carefully sequenced to build secure foundations in phonics, high-frequency vocabulary and key grammatical structures. Extensive modelling of phonics instruction and new vocabulary enables pupils to develop accurate pronunciation and listening skills. Language is taught in relevant contexts, with regular opportunities for structured speaking and interaction.

Grammar is taught explicitly and revisited regularly so that pupils understand how French language works and can reapply this knowledge in different contexts. Vocabulary and structures are recycled through retrieval practice and low-stakes testing.

At KS4, teaching builds on prior knowledge to develop greater accuracy, fluency and spontaneity. Pupils are encouraged to speak and write at length, manipulate more complex grammatical structures and respond confidently to unpredictable questions.

Across KS3 and KS4, cultural awareness is embedded throughout the curriculum through traditions and real-life contexts from the French-speaking world.

IMPACT

By the end of KS3, pupils have a secure foundation in French phonics, vocabulary and grammar, building the way for them to become better communicators. They are starting to demonstrate curiosity and respect for other cultures.

By the end of KS4, pupils are able to manipulate language effectively, speak and write with increasing fluency and respond to a range of real-life and exam-style situations. They demonstrate resilience and an understanding of how language works.

Pupils leave the French department with transferable literacy skills and a broader cultural perspective, well prepared for further language study, employment and participation in an increasingly globalised world.
