Science plays a vital role in understanding ourselves, our responsibilities, and the wider world. At St Margaret Ward Catholic Academy, our science curriculum is rooted in curiosity, compassion, and critical thinking, reflecting our Catholic mission to educate the whole person. We believe that students should leave us as scientifically literate individuals who can engage with the world through ethical, informed, and
reflective enquiry.
Our curriculum is designed to be rigorous, engaging, and inclusive. It provides a rich foundation in biology, chemistry and physics, while embedding the skills of scientific enquiry: asking meaningful questions, planning investigations, collecting and analysing data, and drawing evidence-based conclusions. These skills are transferable and empower students to make informed decisions in their everyday lives.
Catholic Social Teaching informs our approach by encouraging students to consider the moral and social dimensions of scientific progress. Themes such as stewardship of the environment, human dignity, the common good, and solidarity are integrated into learning wherever appropriate. Students explore how science can be used to promote justice, address inequality, and care for creation.
We also aim to raise aspirations and open pathways to future careers. Students are introduced to a wide range of STEM-related professions, including those in healthcare, engineering, environmental science, and research. Our curriculum highlights the relevance of science to real-world issues, helping students understand how their skills and interests can shape their future and contribute positively to society.
In all that we do, we seek to inspire a sense of wonder about the natural world, and to nurture responsible, reflective citizens who use science in service of others and the common good.
