Let girls play

On Wednesday 8th March SMWCA girls took part in the Let Girls Play: an event to encourage equality in football for girls. It was a great success with pupils taking part from Y5 (St George and St Martin) to Yr7-11. Even the snow didn’t stop us.  All of the event was successfully organised by our fabulous Game On Football Activators. They truly have been a credit to the school.

Jenna Downing, champion online skater and leader of the Let Girls Play & Game On programme messaged to say:

“Wow, this is AMAZING! It’s just fantastic to see how many girls you have reached through the campaign! Thanks so much for sending this on to showcase the brilliant work you are doing. Keep it up!!!”

Girls took part in football in lessons throughout the day and in our Y7 girls inter-fidei competition, 7-2a were champions although everyone was a winner on the day and lots of fun was had by all. Future lionesses in the making.

In total, 285,000 girls across Britain took part in Let Girls Play, smashing last year’s total of 90,000. That was enough girls to fill Wembley stadium 3 times over! The future certainly does look bright for girls’ football.
